What are Florida wood cockroaches?

The floridana eurycotis is native to the southeastern United States and can usually be found in warm, humid areas, such as the coast of Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi, and in most of Florida. Florida woods cockroaches are relatively large in size, measuring approximately 1-1 / 4 to 1-1 / 2 inches long and up to 1 inch wide. The body of Florida wood cockroaches extends from reddish brown to black and is similar in appearance to oriental cockroaches. Adults can live for more than a year.

At first glance, this species seems to be wingless; however, they do not have very short wings just below their head. The wings form short leather pads that are barely known in the midline of the body and do not extend to cover any part of the abdomen. In comparison with other cockroaches, the Florida wood cockroach is in relatively slow motion and does not allow running away from disturbance. This could be due to its large size or lack of urgency due to the presence of defensive chemicals. When disturbed this species often emits a strong odor and displease, which leads to its name as the “stinky cockroach.”
